Repairs start on Mediterranean telecoms cables

Work began yesterday to repair the cables torn by a ship’s anchor in the Mediterranean, disrupting internet and international telephone service as far as the Middle East and South Asia.

Local telecoms company Go’s submarine cable was one of those that sustained damage but it still has to be seen whether its repair will take priority over the others. A spokesman for the company said it is in ongoing contact with the international company taking care of the repairs.

Since the cables are at the bottom of the sea the procedure is very complex, but some are expected to be functioning again by the end of the year.

In the meantime, Malta remains dependent on the Vodafone internet cable.
